Securing SharePoint Lists for PowerApps

Stealth Mode: Securing SharePoint Lists for Exclusive PowerApps Access

Lock down SharePoint lists so they are only accessible through your custom PowerApp, preventing users from bypassing application business logic in direct list views.

Video guide on securing SharePoint lists exclusively for PowerApps access.

A common security vulnerability in PowerApps built on top of SharePoint is the 'backdoor problem': users who have edit access through the PowerApp can also navigate directly to the underlying SharePoint list URL and edit or delete records without validating business rules.

In this video walkthrough, I demonstrate how to put SharePoint lists into 'Stealth Mode' to enforce that data interaction occurs strictly through your PowerApp interface.

The Problem: Direct List Access Bypasses PowerApp Logic

When you share a PowerApp connected to SharePoint, users need permissions to the underlying data source. If left unconfigured:

  • Users can bookmark the SharePoint list URL.
  • Users can export all data to Excel directly from SharePoint.
  • Users can bypass validation formulas and required fields built into the canvas app.

How to Implement Stealth Mode

  • 1. Break permission inheritance on the target list and assign tailored Contribute-without-Delete or custom permission levels.
  • 2. Hide the list from browser navigation and search discovery.
  • 3. Utilize Power Automate or Azure App Registrations as proxy execution layers for elevated writes.
